WHAT ARE THEY FOR?

Motherboard: Holds all the pieces for running the computer

Clock Speed: This is how fast the chip is at processing the information i.e 2.0 Ghz

CPU: Central Processing Unit. This chip does all the calculations (thinking) for the computer. i.e Pentium 4 Chip

RAM: Provides storage while running.

Hard Drive: Provides storage for files and programs when the machine is on and off. i.e 40 GB

Operating System: For operating the computer. This is the MAIN program that allows other programs to run. i.e Windows98 or Windows XP

CD — ROM: (Compact Disc — Read Only Memory) For playing music CDs and games. These can run at different speeds. I.e 48x

DVD: Digital Video Disc. Used with games and movies. These can run at different speed i.e 16x

Video Card: For graphic display such as movies and graphics in games.

Sound Card: For playing sound to the speakers

Speakers: For playing sound to the outside world

Floppy Disk Drive: Provides extra storage when the machine is on and off. This storage is portable. (You can take it with you.)

Keyboard: For typing letters and numbers.

Mouse: For clicking on objects and moving your cursor Optical mice with the infra-red "eyes are becoming popular.

Cases: For housing components. Tower cases are popular. This is the plastic or metal box that protects all the parts of your computer

Monitor: For displaying what you do on the screen. Popular sizes are 15" and 17" monitors.
